Google’s Search Results Have Evolved. Do You Know What to Do Now?

Being found at the top of the search results is the goal for most companies. It used to be that you could write content related to the key phrase, along with some other technical elements, and have a good chance at ranking. But times have changed, making it harder to know what to do to get higher in the results without paying for ads. (Ads can be a great option, but it would be ideal to avoid paying for them forever.)

The biggest change is the way the search results pages look. You no longer get a list of ads followed by a list of links with maybe a few map listings in between. Today’s search results are filled with things that Google feels have the potential for providing what you want. It may include one or more of the following in the search results:

  • A definition
  • Video listings
  • Map/Local listings when searching for a business or service that is local
  • Local business listings
  • “Snippets” that try to give the answer without requiring the reader to click. These can be at the top of the page and/or at the right on a desktop.
  • “People Also Ask” list of questions

With these Google changes have come some other items you need to pay attention to:

  • Local listings/business listings
  • Video opportunities
  • Writing your content in a way that Google will be more likely to show it as a “snippet”
  • Answering questions that Google finds to be popular.

How to Achieve Top Positions in Google Search

There is no magic spell or secret recipe that we can follow to get every client to the top of the search results for every important key phrase.
